August 16, 2025:
I didn't hear from anyone about the 250th Anniversary Marine Corp coin that they were offering at the Kaneohe Air Show last weekend. No surprise there, the site is relatively new and it isn't like this is intended for everyone to check in weekly to see "what's new". 🙂
That said, the offer still stands. If you got one of those coins, please send me a pic. I remain interested.
While the site is only a few weeks old, I have seen some local traffic. Hopefully y'all are finding the information helpful and useful. Please send along any suggestions. I also recently added a new account to Reddit. You can find that link on my Contact Me page if you want to reach out there.
Moving on to the topic of this week, "how do I scratch the itch?"...as in, what am I doing to stay engaged in coin collecting?
Have I stopped by any coin shops recently? Nope
Have I gone to any of the local coin shows this year? No, but I do have plans for the 60th Annual Coin Show expo later this year in November. I've included a banner ad for that below in case anyone else is interested to know about it.
One way was for me to build this site. It was definitely a creative outlet and helped in that regards.
There's probably nothing more I'd like than to have someone reach out and ask for help with their collection. It's a chance to dive into something new (and shiny). Yeap. That would be great. But...
...in the process of creating the site, I did look over my Dad's current inventory. It reminded me that I still have lots of work to do. I have inventoried the collection. Well, sort of. For example, there is a row in my tracking sheet titled - "Ancient Coins" - with a description of "Box of Ancient coins in brown box - some have fallen out of packaging, need to sort/identify." So while I haven't exactly forgot about that box I haven't really remembered it either. So there's my next project.
I just went and grabbed it. See the picture below. There has to be 150 coins in this little box. I'm not really expecting these to be of any value either. But they will all be super ancient and I'm somewhat excited to find out what's in there. My Dad was somewhat susceptible to scams in his later years. Some companies take advantage of the elderly in that regards. I'd like to call out one in particular as being very scammy in their dealings but I'm not all that interested in going through a law suit. Caveat Emptor. This package was delivered 10/2001. That means it probably hasn't been looked at in the last 23 years. The company that sent it doesn't appear to exist anymore.
Anyway, always more to learn as I keep saying. Maybe there'll be something surprising in there. We'll see and if so, I'll let ya know. In the meantime, I also have to go put together some fans we purchased from Home Depot to help cool down the home.
As always, thanks for listening. Cya round town.

Has anyone been to Kaneohe MCBH to see the airshow this weekend? They had a good crowd yesterday and I am sure it will be great again today.
We went to the Saturday show. I know not everyone enjoys it, but we found the performance to be most excellent. The sentiment seems to be that the F22 stole the show but I still think nothing surpasses the Blue Angels precision flying as well as the high speed performance maneuvers.
https://www.kaneohebayairshow.com/ - just in case you come across this today and want to check it out.
As we were leaving, we heard an announcement over the speaker about a complimentary give away involving coins for the U.S. Marine Corps 250th anniversary. It sounds like a purchase was required. I didn't find out more as the Wife smartly steered me along towards the exit. 🙂
If anyone received such a coin, please reach out to me via the Contact Me page. I'll respond with my email address. I'd like to see pictures of the coin if you wouldn't mind.
I tried looking up more information and didn't really come across any likely candidates. The coins below are what the US Mint are currently offering and seeing the price tags for those, I am pretty sure they are not offering those as give aways. They are a bit pricey.

Welcome to 808 Coin Collector!
I have been working on putting this together for some time now. It has been an idea running around in my head. I hope you find this site to be informative and helpful. That was its purpose from the outset. You can reach out to me via the Contact Me page and let me know if it was a hit or a miss. I am an adult and can take constructive criticism.
If you have actually spent some time reading through this site, you will know that my inspiration was my Dad. If he's checking in, he'll be happy to find out that his coin collecting passion was passed along as intended. I also hope he would take some pride in finding that I am willing to share this information to help others.
In the upcoming weeks and months, I'm planning to add some more content. Some of this will come via direct feedback from readers such as yourself. Other information will be added as I reach out to professionals locally on island. I am quite aware that I am not near the end of the learning process here.
I can think of other topics:
Error coins, worth it?
Are the coins from the US Mint worth collecting?
Are memorabilia coins worth collecting?
Until next time, a hui hou!
